And Then There Was A Keg

Thanks to a little extra summer work, I now have the means to keg beer. Which means I'll save super-ridiculous amounts of time that I would have spent bottling beer, and also I'll have my own kegged beer. Here's what it alls gets down to. Hardware: 5 gallon Cornelius keg (soda keg) 5 lb. CO2 tank dual gauge regulator Software: beer (obviously) So here's how I understand the process to work. (I who haven't actually kegged anything yet but have read about it.) 1. I'll clean and sanitize the keg. It used to hold soda, and it still smell like it when I open it up. This will not...

Top of the Hops Beer Festival in Jackson

Last weekend, my wife and I and some friends went to the Top of the Hops beer festival in Jackson, MS. The festival was indoors, which was nice considering it was hotter than two hells outside, and they had about 150 beers, according to the website and publicity. So how was it?

This is how it was.

This festival had several good beers to try. Rogue was there, Merchant Du Vin was there (the Samuel Smith beers), Abita, Lazy Magnolia, Sam Adams, Yazoo were all there as well. And I tried at least one beer from...

On Bartenders

I've written a fair amount about beer on this site. Obviously. But I haven't addressed many things that're just related to beer. Whether the relation is tangential, integral, or something like a by-product (which could also be tangential, I'm slightly less than good at math), you won't have found my indisputable and groundbreaking opinions of said topics in the posts before this one. Before this one. There are many ways to drink beer: from a 12 pack of cans while sitting on your couch watching [insert favorite sport]; through a rented picnic tap while being suspended upside down above a keg by...

Beers in L.A. (6/29-7/2) pt. 2

Now that you've had time to ruminate on Chuck Norris' supraphysical abilities, maybe you're ready to hear about some more beer. Good. So the last post got us through basically the first day of the trip. And the rest of the beers I had on my last night in L.A. at a bar/restaurant called Morels in The Grove Mall in West Hollywood. At least I think it's in West Hollywood. I'm not much of a navigator. My brother was working, so I had some time to kill and figured I'd do some 'research.' When I sat down at the bar, I...

Beers in L.A. (6/29-7/2) pt. 1

This week I went to visit my brother in L.A. for a few days. It was my first time in California, and since they've such a wide variety of good craft beers, I was excited to do some research during the trip. So over Tuesday, Wednesday, and yesterday (up until my plane left at 12:55am), I tried to maximize my intake of beers Californian and/or unavailable here at home. It wasn't much time to try as many beers as I wanted to, but, let's be honest here, it just never is. Of the beers I tried, half will be discussed as...

Drinking It All: #31 Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout

June 28, 2010 by Ed · 1 Comment
Filed under: beer, drinking it all

Drinking It All is a document of my attempt to try every beer in circulation. It’s a Herculean and tragic attempt at best. But it’s the means, not the end that counts here. – I had a birthday this past weekend and my good friends Ben and Selena got me a couple of four packs of fancy beer. Thanks, Ben and Selena. Also, they got me beers I haven't had before. So today I'm trying Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. I think this is the first stout I've posted about (aside from the one I made), which is a shame because I like...

Books About Beer: Good Beer Guide Prague & The Czech Republic

I'm not sure there are many things that sound less interesting than a blog post about a travel book about beer, but, you know what, fuck it. A friend of mine, who's been living in the Czech Republic for a few years now, is in town and he let me borrow a beer guide to Czech beers. I've not been to the country yet, but I do love me a good book about beer, so I started reading it this morning. Since this book is a travel guide of a place I haven't been to and don't really have plans to...

Beer News: Calagione and Batali Open Brewpub in NYC

June 16, 2010 by Ed · 1 Comment
Filed under: News you've probably heard, Uncategorized, beer

I recently (a day ago) found out that two people who I think are pretty damn kick-ass are opening a brewpub in New York City. While I don't live in NYC, it is possible for me (and you) to go there, so I am excited about the news. Sam Calagione, founder of Dogfish Head Brewery, and Mario Batali, who used to be on numerous Food Channel shows and is the owner of Otto (an awesome pizza place in NYC that you should definitely go to if you're in the city) among other restaurants, are part of a group of people about...

Drinking It All: #30 Brewery Ommegang’s Hennepin

Drinking It All is a document of my attempt to try every beer in circulation. It’s a Herculean and tragic attempt at best. But it’s the means, not the end that counts here. – I just finished watching an episode of Drink Up (on the 'new' Cooking Channel that recently replaced the Fine Living Network), which was about beer, and since I wasn't doing anything else, I got out a beer to review. Lucky me and you. I decided on a Hennepin from Brewery Ommegang--a 'true Belgian-style saison.' I'm pretty sure I've made it evident that I'm no expert when it comes to...

Drinking It All: #29 Boulder Beer Co. Cold Hop

Drinking It All is a document of my attempt to try every beer in circulation. It’s a Herculean and tragic attempt at best. But it’s the means, not the end that counts here. – It's been about a week and a half since I last posted because I've been somewhat busy making the bread that my wife and I sell at our community market. But now I'm cracking into some beers I've been saving up. Today I've got a beer called Cold Hop made by Boulder Beer Company. This beer looks like a joke. If I'm to be honest. The label reminds me...
